Duke provides recommendations for purchasing laptops, desktop computers, mobile devices, and other hardware. Departments use many methods to procure equipment for Duke faculty and staff, including the Buy@Duke program and the Duke Technology Center. Students are encouraged to use Duke Technology Center offerings including the Duke Computer Care Coverage program to get an extra level protection for your device.
Departments and programs may have specific hardware requirements, configurations or policies that determine which hardware they will support to meet your computing needs. We recommend that you contact your local IT support staff for confirmation.
Duke Computer Purchasing Program
University faculty and staff may use the Duke Computer Purchasing Program, which offers computers from our three preferred vendors, Apple, Dell and Lenovo, in standard configurations to meet the needs of different levels of users. These business-grade machines have longer life and better warranties than equivalent consumer-grade computers purchased at retail locations.
Duke Medicine faculty and staff have access to a different set of standardized machines. For additional information about the program, visit the Duke Technology Center website or contact the store at (919) 684-8956 or email@example.com, but please note that the Duke Technology Center is authorized to accept orders only from approved purchasing agents for schools and departments.
If you prefer to buy a computer from another retailer, please follow these minimum hardware specifications.
Computer repair services
Depending on your Duke affiliation, hardware repair services may be available through your IT service provider or via Duke managed services. In most cases, warranty services are arranged through these entities to repair and return your equipment with a little inconvenience as possible. Faculty and staff should consult with their primary IT support staff for information on these services. Duke students should contact the OIT service desk to confirm what services are available.
- Duke Computer Repair - Computer repair can provide authorized warranty service for computers and printers. Computer repair also sells a number of computer parts, provides on-site service or pick up/drop off repairs on request.
- OIT Link Service Desk - The Link service desk can provide coordinate hardware repair of student computers through Duke Computer Repair. Contact the OIT Service Desk for information and details or visit the Link Service Desk (map).
Computer or mobile device batteries
Don't just throw out that battery! Duke offers several battery recycling locations. Please see this page for more information.
All surplus property, including computers, that were purchased with Duke funds or are considered Duke property must be processed through Surplus Property Asset Disposition Tool for tracking purposes.
All University and Health System-purchased property, including electronics, must flow through the Surplus Property Program at end-of-life. The items are collected daily and transported to various facilities for donation, wiping or recycling. Computers and data-containing items that do not pass Department of Defense wiping standards are transported via secure vehicle, to a local electronics recycler in Research Triangle Park. The destruction of these items is then witnessed by University staff, resulting in a fine, gravel-like metal mixture that is then recycled by metal type. By strategically selecting a local electronics recycling firm, it is ensured that the electronic waste is recycled responsibly and is never resold and exported.
Electronics in good repair are donated to internal University and Health System departments, as well as the local school system and hundreds of area non-profit groups.
Good quality, surplus furniture and computers are available to Duke Departments at no charge through our Surplus Property Program. To request computers for Duke Departmental use, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
