Israel experienced a sharp decline in the number of its high achievers in mathematics in high schools between 2006 and 2012. The steep falloff placed the "start-up nation" at risk and was cause for public alarm. This talk tells the story of how Israel awoke to this trouble and articulates the strategy that enabled it to reverse and restore its performance. The talk will emphasize the role played within this strategy by catalytic philanthropy.

She was a senior product owner with Lumeris and a product manager with PeopleFluent. She has a bachelor of science in computer engineering from NC State.

Alan Sheridan is a Tech Lead/Manager for Google, where he's worked for more than eight years. He has a master's in computer science and a bachelor of science in computer science and math for more than eight years. He was president of NC State's inaugural Dance Marathon, which benefited Duke Children's Hospital, and he was named NC State's 2011 Male Leader of the Pack in recognition of his community service and leadership skills.

Suzy Steele is Director of Data & Analytics, IT & Strategy Services, with Cree, the Durham, NC-based semiconductor manufacturing firm. She was previously at Red Hat for 11 years where she was Director of Data & Analytics, Director of Data Management, and Senior Manager of Operations Data Management. Prior to Red Hat, she was a change manager and business systems consultant with Martin Marietta Materials.
